Why Does BV Come Back After Taking Antibiotics? | V-Luxe

What is BV?

BV (bacterial vaginosis) is a condition that is caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria. Our vagina hosts numerous bacterias (good and bad) that usually live in harmony and balance. The good bacteria (lactobacillus) is responsible for creating lactic acid, an acid that keeps our vaginal pH level between 3.5 - 4.5. This healthy pH level does not allow for bad bacteria to overgrow and cause an infection.

However, when the pH level is being disturbed (by causes that are still unknown), the bad bacteria in the vagina can overgrow, create stronger colonies using biofilm (we'll touch on that later) and that's when BV related symptoms appear. BV symptoms are usually smelly/fishy odor, itching, burning, and overall uncomfortable.

Antibiotics to Treat Bacterial Vaginosis:

The only current medical treatment for BV is antibiotics. It comes in a pill or cream form. There are two issued with antibiotics though:

1) They kill both bad and good bacteria.

2) Remember when we talked about the biofilm? This is a film that bad bacteria produces from sugar which in some cases might protect it from the antibiotic treatment. To better understand what biofilm really is, imagine a city of sticky web that basically acts as defense for a large number of bad bacteria.

Why did my BV Return After Taking Antibiotics?

So, why is it so hard to get rid of bacterial vaginosis?

1) Like we said, the antibiotics kill the good bacteria, the bacteria that's responsible to keeping our vaginal pH level HEALTHY! That's why it's important to take daily probiotics during your antibiotic treatment and after it. It's extremely important to be consistent because it takes the good bacteria time and effort to grow and colonize in your body. Here at V-Luxe we created a proprietary probiotic formula which is specifically formulated to help women who are dealing with recurring vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and even UTIs! We also include prebiotic in our formula which is the food good bacteria loves to eat and that keeps her alive for a long period of time! Remember, good bacteria is a very sensitive creature, and it needs the perfect conditions and food supplies to stay alive!

2) If the antibiotic wasn't able to fully breakthrough the biofilm protection, it is more likely that your BV will come back. The bad bacteria uses SUGAR to build their biofilm, so it's important to cut down on your sugar levels to try and break down the bad bacteria's defense system. Here's an article we wrote about how to keep a healthy diet that will help you prevent bacterial vaginosis.
