3 Common Myths About Bacterial Vaginosis | V-Luxe

Posted by V-Luxe on on May 17th 2022

Myth #1: BV is the Same as Thrush/Yeast Infection
While BV & yeast infections may share some similar symptoms, they are not the same! Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria, while yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of yeast.

Myth #2: You Get BV From Having Sex
Partially True.
BV can be triggered by sex, but it can also be triggered by other things. It's possible that you'll get BV from having sex because semen is alkaline and it may bring your vaginal pH level up, which will create an opportunity for the bad bacteria to overgrow and cause BV, but it's not always the case.

Myth #3: Eating Acidic Food Will Prevent BV
There is no evidence showing us that acidic food will have an impact on our vaginal pH level. With that being said, it is important to stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet if you are struggling with BV.
On the other hand, specific types of good bacteria strains (probiotics) have been studied and shown to bring the vaginal pH level to normal levels (3.5 - 4.5). The probiotics colonize the vagina and produce lactic acid. This acid brings your vaginal pH level down and prevents bad bacteria and yeast from overgrowing!
